Kenora Sea Beaver 24 foot former RCMP motorboat vessel from 1947 to 1957

Kenora Sea Beaver 24 foot former RCMP motorboat vessel from 1947 to 1957

This stylish lake cruiser was manufactured in 1947 by the Canadian Power Boat Co., Montreal, Quebec and served with the RCMP Force, Marine and Vessel Division. A 24 x 8 x 2.5 foot Cruiser built under the trade name "Sea Beaver" it was a Class C Marine Division 2 Crew Cruiser. Their inventory number #114, RCMP # MP90. It was Christened by the RCMP, the "Kenora" and was in Government service from 1947 till February 19, 1957 out of Kenora Ontario and the Lake of the Woods area. Purchased by my father on a government surplus bid it was our family cruiser from 1957 till 1970. A wood boat it was powered by a Chrysler Ace gasoline marine engine, 95 hp with a speed of 18 kts and a displacement of 1.6 GT. It utilized a shallow "chime" tunnel hull design for stability at high speeds and shallow water. It had double births for sleeping, a fully equipped galley and a 2 piece head. The outer control seating was suitable for a captain and co-captain with an ice-box and large storage underneath. There was a full seating area with cushions across the rear transit. The sun shade top was wood frame with permanent canvas covering and it had a full set of side and rear curtains for full weather enclosure. Wide gunnels and lots of grip positions made for easy cat walking around the outer deck. The transmission was silky smooth and the boat could be easily maneuvered in tight spots without the usual lurch that most cruisers have. On more than one occasion I was out on Lake Huron with this boat in extremely rough conditions and it never failed to power up and ride out the high rolling white caps. A wonderful designed yacht it served our family and friends well during our time with it. It was re-Christened by us the "Ambassador' and was a regular sight in Grand Bend Ontario and the Aux Sauble River during every summer season that we owned it. Photographed on the shores of the south beach of Grand Bend on a July morning in 1967.
The company that built this vessel was owned by marine boat designer and famous boat racer, British business man Hubert Scott-Paine. His various firms built Motor Torpedo Boats for the British, American and Canadian armed forces during the second world war.

early for work

early for work

while we were on an asian cruise in vietnam, i was awaken early in the morning around 5 am because the ship was literally rocking left and right. I peeked out of the window and saw that we were in a river with thousands of magroves on the sides. The water was relatively shallow so the ship went really slow, very peaceful without much of the sound of the ship's engine. I grabbed my camera, put on my sweater and went out. I went to the deck and got this photo. Bouys, barges and boats were floating placidly in the water even before the sun has completely risen. The scenery was so beautiful. The skies were painted in all shades of yellow and blue and the waves on the water just crisscross each other. It's early for work in this beautiful Vietnam River.
